Today’s offering is a poem from seventh grader Caroline Steinbach. Caroline writes way above her age, and captures the feeling of seeing someone you love move on or go away.
For me, the money line: I would like to see you soar/even though it might not be as high as you hoped.
To want to see someone do what they are meant to do, even if their dreams aren’t realized, or if they don’t put as much distance between themselves and what they are leaving as they wanted, is the essence of love. It’s wanting to see them try. Here’s Caroline:
My Little Butterfly
my little butterfly
spread your wings and soar like an eagle
my little butterfly
spread your wings across the sea and soar so freely
I would like to see you soar
even though it might not be as high as you hoped
but please don't fly away and never comeback
and leave me so blue waiting on you
my little butterfly
soar so high you could reach the sky
but come home sometimes
and tell us what you have seen
and who you meet
there will always be room for you
in our nest
and you will always be in our heart
Caroline! I love this poem! I picture you as a little girl literally saying this to a butterfly you’ve found, again as a mom watching your baby going to Kindergarten, and then again as you watch your grown child leave home. So sweet!
