Here are some poems from our students. They are excellent, and we hope you will encourage them to keep writing. Some stay true to form. Some blend genres. All are from middle schoolers.
Matthew 6:25-34
Look at the birds as they soar
Aren’t you worth so much more
God gives them food
So why would he exclude
Why do you worry about clothes
God dresses the grass and he rose
So don’t worry about a thing
It won’t add anything
Pagans go after these
But God knows your needs
Seek first the kingdom that’s true
And all these things will be added onto you
So don't worry about tomorrow
For each day has enough sorrow

The Blue Jay
Slowly, the blue jay flits through the sky
Its quick darts through the air make it little more than a blue blur
Even the clouds move away for the feisty bird
Unfortunately, a falcon makes its presence known
It shoots through the air, heading straight for the jay
It’s talons extend, its wings thrash the air
The chase goes on for miles, over hills and briars
Frantically twittering, the bluejay drops a few feet
All of a sudden, bang! A gunshot rings out
The falcon falls like a rock and smashes into the ground
The bluejay flies into the expanse
The man on the ground with a smoking gun smiles and walks inside

A Sonnet on the Law
A law is something that one must abide
Unless the law is corrupted and bad
That’s when I would say you are in need of have a guide
This guide made a perfect law for us to not be sad
Law is a good thing for us to stay free
And if we disobey the laws in place
Then we will all be able to agree
That we will end up in a confined space
So in this conclusion, this summary
Follow the laws in place so that we can thrive
And if you slipped and your in recovery
Just remember that Jesus gives grace to strive
So obey the laws that are given to us
Stop complaining about them and just shush.

Secrets of an Old Lighthouse
He went to the lighthouse to find some clues
The winter ocean was creepy and dark
He held a letter with the secret news
Waves rose above in a threatening ark
Inside the lighthouse, he found an old map
With strange symbols and an underground path
He followed the map and entered a trap
He discovered a journal with a graph
The evidence of crimes was in the book
Yet as he tried to leave the eerie room
He turned and someone grabbed him with a hook
Then there was pain and nothing to assume
The police could not find him they announced
All the mysteries stay in the lighthouse

Two Short Poems on Death
I jumped off a building and fell down the sky
I wasn’t wrong thinking that I couldn’t fly
My step-brother Bill
Is not in my will
So definitely don’t tell him that I'm gonna die.
He goes by Death, The Reaper, Hades, or Raven
He’s always around just waiting to strike
He lifts up his scythe when it’s your time
And plunges it down towards your head

Love Between Pages
Whenever I read about love in books,
It seems so loving, so genuine.
I imagine pure love like that exists.
Love that makes my heart flutter,
That calms me and soothes me all in one.
Love that knows me from all around,
And love that supports me in dark nights
Love that gives me flowers and gifts,
Love that
Just
Feels
